Mr. Thomas Varghese, Head – Pulp Operations, Grasim Industries Ltd., gives his views on winning the coveted IMC Ramakrishna Bajaj National Quality Special Award for performance excellence 2007 in the manufacturing category.

What award did your unit receive recently and what is the significance of this award?

The rayon grade pulp manufacturing unit at Harihar
Grasim (Harihar Polyfibers & Grasiline Division), Harihar Unit won the coveted IMC Ramakrishna Bajaj National Quality Special Award for performance excellence 2007 in the manufacturing category. This is one of the most prestigious and coveted awards in the manufacturing excellence category in India. It is a matter of pride that out of 350 manufacturing companies that were in the fray, Grasim Harihar Unit won the award after passing through a maze of stringent parameters.

Please elaborate on the initiatives taken by your unit to get this prestigious award.

The unit won through the unique visioning exercise carried out with the full involvement of our employees and drew out in 2004 a strategic action plan for the unit upto 2008. The initiative involved not just focussing on manufacturing excellence but also focussing on key initiatives with respect to customers, suppliers and communities besides having a concerted performance bias. Hence despite numerous challenges the focus on other stakeholders coupled with creation of a performance based culture strengthened by an effective performance management system helped us achieve this coveted award. In addition enhanced communication, transparency and large number of people initiatives has helped us in fostering team work, innovation and a performance driven culture. We have also taken a number of quality of life initiatives which has helped focus and create a feeling of belongingness and commitment amongst our employees both at the staff and workmen level.

What steps are you likely to take to upscale your efforts to continue getting recognised for performance excellence

We are going to continue all the positive initiatives and in fact identify areas of weakness where we can further improve at this unit. Our concerted focus would be on reaching world class level of business excellence through our constant endeavour and efforts.

The IMC Bajaj Special Award is a recognition of the World Class Excellence in addition to being short-listed for the Aditya Birla Groups Platinum WCM Award.

My team at Harihar is still on its way towards this journey of business excellence and I am sure with some more efforts we would strive to become one of the highest performing company in the Indian corporate landscape and ofcourse be one of the best units within the Aditya Birla Group.
